Welcome to the first edition of Towards the PIC. The Personal Injury Commission (PIC) legislation was passed by the NSW Parliament on 5 August 2020.  It was assented to on 11 August with an establishment date of 1 March 2021.  

As the current President of the Workers Compensation Commission and inaugural President of the PIC, I have been appointed to undertake the preparatory steps necessary or convenient to facilitate the establishment of the PIC.

I will use this ‘Towards the PIC’ newsletter to advise you all about the actions we are taking to prepare for the PIC. We are embarking on an exciting and challenging road, and I am confident we will achieve success as we work together to establish the new Commission, for the benefit of injured workers and road users in New South Wales.

Statutory appointments

The following appointments were made on 26 August 2020, pursuant to section 7 of the Personal Injury Commission Act 2020 (the Act) by the Honorable Mark Speakman SC MP, Attorney General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence:

1. President of the PIC – Judge Gerard Phillips
2. Division Head – Workers Compensation Division –Mr Rodney Parsons
3. Division Head – Motor Accidents Division – Ms Marie Johns  

Following my appointment as President of the PIC, I am empowered under s 7 of the PIC Act to take steps before 1 March 2021 to establish the Commission.

Rule Committee appointments

Pursuant to section 19 of the PIC Act, there must be a Rule Committee. The development of the rules is a critical task for the commencement of the PIC and the time between now and 1 March 2021 will go by quickly. To that end, I am pleased to note that I have received the following appointments to the Rule Committee.
